Michael Jackson was unquestionably the biggest pop star of the '80s, and certainly one of the most popular recording artists of all time. In his prime, Jackson was an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the tools to dominate the charts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and loads of sheer star power. His 1982 blockbuster Thriller became the biggest-selling album of all time (probably his best-known accomplishment), and he was the first black artist to find stardom on MTV, breaking down innumerable boundaries both for his race and for music video as an art form.

Whether as a pop icon or a tabloid caricature, Jackson always remained bigger than life.
He passed away, but his music will live on forever...

The village Earth

If we could turn the population of the Earth into a small village community of 100 people, keeping roughly the same proportions we have today on our planet, it would be something like this.

Welcome to our Global Village, the village Earth. In our village there are 100 people.

51 people are women and 49 are men.

61 people are from Asia.

12 people are from Europe.

14 people are from Norht and South America.

There are 13 people from Africa.

13 people don't have enough to eat, or are actually dying from hunger.

More than 40 people in the village live without basic sanitation, and 16 people live without water that can be drunk.

Roughly 14 adults in the village can't read or write. Only seven have had a secondary school education.

Eight people have a computer and four are connected to the internet.

Eight people have a car and ten percent of the houses are powered by electricity. Some people keep their food in a refrigerator and their clothes in a wardrobe; they have a roof over their heads and they have a bed to sleep in. These people represent about 75 per cent of the entire population of the village.

Six people in our village own 59 per cent of the entire wealth of all the people in our community. Forty seven people live on two dollars or less a day.

25 people struggle to live on a dollar a day or less.

If you have a bank account, you're one of the 30 wealthiest people in the village.

Of all the money that the village spends every year: about 5.5 per cent is spent on weapons and war, roughly 3.4 per cent is spent on education and something like 2.6 per cent is spent on keeping people healthy.

Next year, there will be 105 people in the village.

Time to change...

Nowadays, we can listen everywhere that our planet is in serious danger. However some people say that the situation of the Earth isn’t so bad. Curiously, these people are usually supported by the countries’ governments which are in the center of this environmental problem.
Everyone knows that if the Earth’s temperature keeps rising, the human beings and all the sustainability of the planet will be affected. So, the question is: “Do these people think that they are safe from the calamities that will happen in a near future?”. I think they know that if this situation becomes worse, the human beings will abide the consequences of their acts. But these people are moved by power and greed and they won’t stop unless someone does something.
This being the case, people must lose their fear and they must address all the people who ignore the fact that the planet Earth is being destroyed.
Even if our words seem insignificant and that our strengths seem to disappear, we must be persistent and we must think that sometimes a small sign can make a difference.

Climate change: a problem with no solution

Nowadays, the human kind is concerned about exploring the universe, develop technologies, conquer countries, invent a new nuclear bomb to destroy an enemy country, etc. However, we don’t realize that all these problems are hiding another one which is much worse: The Pollution of the Earth.
This huge problem is killing us slowly: the global temperature is rising, glaciers are melting, rainforests and water are disappearing and one hundred billion species are being killed (including us!) and we just don’t care! All we care about is if our country’s economy is better, if we have sufficient money to buy something and finding a way to earn more.
How could we think about all these insignificant things if the place where we live is being destroyed?! Primitive species of human kind could live without all these technologies and habits. They didn’t destroy our planet to survive, so why do we? The Earth is a precious thing that we must preserve at any cost! It’s the only home we have, by now.
We must be taught to have green choices, such as recycling or saving energy and water. It is this thought that might save our planet and consequently our lives!

An English teacher in Paris!

Yes, I've just arrived from Paris!

I went there for the first time and I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the city!

Amazing monuments and museums, beautiful gardens, wonderful buildings and a magical river where one can live romantic moments or just dream and smile and enjoy the beauty of life!

It was wonderful to feel the motion of the city while walking along the crowded sidewalks and streets!

On the opposite side of all that, the peace of the huge green gardens brought strength and warmth to my spirit...

Through the years, many people tried to find a definition to a very controversial subject: beauty. Its large concept depends on our familiar surroundings, this is, it depends on everything that is around us and that influences our way of thinking and our ideals. One day, Luís de Camões, the greatest portuguese poet, said that "Mudam-se os tempos, Mudam-se as vontades": this is real because, with the development of our society, the behaviour and the tastes of the new generations are changing and, with them, the definition of beauty is changing too. After this, we can say that our idea of what is beautiful or not is part of our culture and who we are. Nowadays, teens live a trivial and consumerist life, where fashion takes on large proportions, influencing these young generations. In fact, almost all teenagers don't want to be ridiculed by their friends. In spite of being an injustice, this is what happens all around the world.

Addicted to new technologies...

We can no longer live without technology.

I speak for myself. I'm addicted to it. I got hooked! Now I can't live without my mobile phone, my computer, my mp3 player... There is no way I can live without the Internet... It is so useful: I pay my bills, I do research, I buy things, I read the news, I look for information, I watch videos and listen to music, I talk to my distant friends... How did I manage to live before all this technology that surrounds me now? I don't know the answer, but I'm sure about one thing: life nowadays is much more interesting than 15 years ago... I don't know if you agree with me...

"Beauty" 1

In my opinion, the word "beauty" has a relative meaning. When we say that someone is beautiful, we can consider his/her look (outside beauty) or his/her personality (inner beauty). This meaning is different for each people. A person might think that somebody is beautiful and another one disagree with the first one.
This concept changes when we grow up. In our childhood, we consider that someone is beautiful when that person is nice and lovely. However, after this period of our life, beauty is to us what we see on TV, newspapers, magazines, films, etc. We are always comparing to the people we see in the mass media. Their look isn't real! All those pretty faces and perfect bodies are made to impress normal people and to make them buy what they want.
That's why teenagers try to copy celebrities. They want to be as much successful as they are. Teens are also trying to be seen and recognized as somebody important that everyone wants to be.
We should be what we really are. Even if we have some tastes that other people might think awkward, we should be true to ourselves. That is what defines our true beauty!

A special night (short-story)

When Jane woke up that morning she immediately felt that that was going to be a special day: she had the feeling that something would happen. Like every morning, she got up to have her breakfast. Unfortunately, when she looked through the window, she saw a dark sky, filled by shining stars; it was night. That event was really strange, but she thought it would be tiresome, because her last week at school was extremelly hard. She tried to sleep again, but she couldn't and so she decided to keep looking at the stars, contemplating all the universe over the insignificant civilization.

Suddenly, the wind became stronger and she caught a glimpse of someone in the distance, a man walking through the clouds with a big beard and a bag which looked like a bunch of presents. Finally, she remembered that it was Christmas, realising only at that moment, the real meaning of life.

My beloved chemistry! (short-story)

When Jane woke up that morning she immediately felt that that was going to be a special day.

It was Thursday! It was the only day that she had Chemistry and she simply loved it! Those atoms and pratical experiences made Jane extremely excited that she even dreamt about it. However, Chemistry was the second class on Thursday. First she had French and she didn't like it very much, but she was used to that anxiety.
She went to school. When the bell rang, she went into the French classroom, but for her own surprise, the Chemistry teacher was there! Her favourite teacher since her 7 th form! She was replacing the French teacher who was sick and stayed at home. That day couldn't be more perfect! The entire morning learning Chemistry! It could only be a dream! Jane wished those dreams were more frequent...

A special day (short story)

When Jane woke up that morning she immediately felt that that was going to be a special day.

Maybe because she was going to a concert that she had been waiting for so long, or just because she felt very happy! So, she called her best friends to invite them to the concert and all accepted, so she felt even happier. Later that day, when she was going to the concert, she bought the new CD of her favourite band and a pin of that band too, and her friends though that probably that was her lucky day, because nothing bad has stopped her happiness! When she was in the concert, she met a guy, and he was very nice and they had the same musical tastes, so she felt a connection with him, and they danced all night long on the sound of Ska, their favourite type of music. When the concert was over, Jane and her friends went home, and they were all very happy because the concert was amazing!
Next day, Jane woke up very sad, because she wanted to turn back time and to be in the concert again with the guy she had met. Some minutes later, when Jane was having her breakfast, someone knocked, it was the guy Jane had met! When she opened the door, she felt happy again, because the guy was there to know how she was, and they spent all day together remembering the awsome night, the night they had met!

Teachers fight for a better Education in Portugal

Portugal is mentioned abroad, but not for the best reasons.

Portugal’s teachers have descended on Lisbon en masse. More than 100,000 staff from all over the country gathered for a rally in the centre of the Portuguese capital.
They are furious at the socialist government’s education policies in general, and a new method of assessing teachers’ performance in particular – introduced for the first time this year.
Although they do not question the need for evaluation, they argue that the system as it stands is too bureaucratic, and difficult to operate fairly. But that is not the only issue which sparked such a huge turnout.
They are also unhappy with their work timetable, the way jobs are distributed, and the status of teachers in Portugal.

Alan Rickman is my favourite actor

Alan Sydney Patrick Rickman was born in February 21th, in 1946. He is perhaps best known to American film audiences for his roles as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films and Hans Gruber in Die Hard. He also featured prominently as the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. More recently, Rickman portrayed Judge Turpin in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.He is a versatile actor, because he can play many types of roles, such as dangerous and romantic roles. In his role in Harry Potter films, Rickman seems to be a very strict teacher and one of the worst characters in Harry Potter's film. His role is played with an unbelievable naturalness. In my opinion, nowadays there aren´t many actors like him. Do you agree? Tell me your opinions about this issue.

Russell Crowe is my favourite actor

Russell Ira Crowe was born on 7th April 1964, New Zealand. Son of movie set caterers, early cinema was in his blood. Beginning as a child star on a local Australian TV show, Russell's first big break came with two films : the first, «Romper Stomper» (1992) and the second, «The Sum of Us» (1994), that helped put him on the American map. After initial success in Australia, Russell Crowe began acting in American films. He first co-starred with Denzel Washington in "Virtuosity" in 1995. He went on to become a three-time Oscar nominee, winning the Academy Award as Best Actor in 2001 for "Gladiator" (2000). He also has a good performance in "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), where Russell performed the role of John Forbes Nash, a great mathematician who had schizophrenia.

Presently, Russell is married to Danielle Spencer and they have two sons
(Charles and Tennyson). Russell performs his roles with a big reality, as if he was the person that he has to create. That amazing ability conciliated with his strength of will make him one of the best actors in the world.

Top 10 Tips for Classroom Discipline and Management

Classroom discipline and management causes the most fear and consternation in new teachers. However, classroom management is a skill that is not only learned but practiced daily. Here are ten tips that can lead to successful classroom management and discipline. These tips can help you cut down on discipline problems and leave you with fewer interruptions and disruptions.

1. It's Easier to Get Easier
Many teachers make the mistake of starting the school year with a poor discipline plan. Students quickly assess the situation in each class and realize what they will be allowed to get away with. Once you set a precedent of allowing a lot of disruptions, it can be very hard to start better classroom management and discipline techniques. However, it is never tough to get easier as the year goes on. While you don't have to follow the adage, "Never smile until Christmas," it does have its merits.
2. Fairness is Key
Students have a distinct sense of what is and what is not fair. You must act fairly for all students if you expect to be respected. If you do not treat all students equitably, you will be labelled as unfair students will not be keen to follow your rules. Make sure that if your best student does something wrong, they too get punished for it.
3. Deal with Disruptions with as Little Interruption as Possible
When you have classroom disruptions, it is imperative that you deal with them immediately and with as little interruption of your class momentum as possible. If students are talking amongst themselves and you are having a classroom discussion, ask one of them a question to try to get them back on track. If you have to stop the flow of your lesson to deal with disruptions, then you are robbing students who want to learn of their precious in-class time.
4. Avoid Confrontations in Front of Students
Whenever there is a confrontation in class there is a winner and a loser. Obviously as the teacher, you need to keep order and discipline in your class. However, it is much better to deal with discipline issues privately than cause a student to 'lose face' in front of their friends. It is not a good idea to make an example out of a disciplinary issue. Even though other students might get the point, you might have lost any chance of actually teaching that student anything in your class.
5. Stop Disruptions with a Little Humor
Sometimes all it takes is for everyone to have a good laugh to get things back on track in a classroom. Many times, however, teachers confuse good humor with sarcasm. While humor can quickly diffuse a situation, sarcasm may harm your relationship with the students involved. Use your best judgment but realize that what some people think as funny others find to be offensive.
6. Keep High Expectations in Your Class
Expect that your students will behave, not that they will disrupt. Reinforce this with the way you speak to your students. When you begin the day, tell your students your expectations. For example, you might say, "During this whole group session, I expect you to raise your hands and be recognized before you start speaking. I also expect you to respect each other's opinions and listen to what each person has to say."
7. Overplan
Free time is something teachers should avoid. By allowing students time just to talk each day, you are setting a precedent about how you view academics and your subject. To avoid this, overplan. When you have too much to cover, you'll never run out of lessons and you will avoid free time. You can also fill up any left over time with mini-lessons as described elsewhere on this site.
8. Be Consistent
One of the worst things you can do as a teacher is to not enforce your rules consistently. If one day you ignore misbehaviors and the next day you jump on someone for the smallest infraction, your students will quickly lose respect for you. Your students have the right to expect you to basically be the same everyday. Moodiness is not allowed. Once your lose your student's respect, you also lose their attention and their desire to please you.
9. Make Rules Understandable
You need to be selective in your rules (no one can follow 180 rules consistently). You also need to make them clear. Students should understand what is and what is not acceptable. Further, you should make sure that the consequences for breaking your rules are also clear and known beforehand.
10. Start Fresh Everyday
This tip does not mean that you discount all previous infractions, i.e. if they have three tardies then today means four. However, it does mean that you should start teaching your class each day with the expectation that students will behave. Don't assume that because Julie has disrupted your class everyday for a week, she will disrupt it today. By doing this, you will not be treating Julie any differently and thereby setting her up to disrupt again (like a self-fulfilling prophecy).

In the United States of America, between 1996 and 2000, 599,000 violent crimes against teachers at school were reported.

Teachers also face threats of violence and intimidation. In the 1999-2000 school year, 9 percent of all teachers were threatened with injury by a student from their school, and 4 percent were physically attacked by a student.

In the UK,teachers are warning that pupils' violent behaviour is causing staff to leave the profession.

A third of teachers in the UK have faced physical aggression from pupils and more than half have known of colleagues who had left teaching because of poor pupil behaviour.

When I ask my students about their hobbies, chatting and sending text messages on mobile phones are always on the list! Even the well-known hi5s are a way of being in touch with friends, meeting new people and sending messages. Why do we have such a need, nowadays?
